Preparing Our Hearts (and Our Children’s) for Christmas

Our Divine Redeemer students celebrating the joy of Christmas with Santa, reminding us that the season is about faith, love, and joyful hearts.

The Challenge of Christmas in Today’s Culture

For many families, the weeks before Christmas are filled with shopping, decorating, and endless to-do lists. While these can be joyful, they often distract us from the true meaning of Christmas: welcoming Christ into our hearts.

At Divine Redeemer School, we encourage families to slow down during Advent and embrace traditions that prepare the heart, not just the home.

Advent: A Season of Waiting and Preparing

Advent is a sacred season of waiting. Just as Mary and Joseph prepared to welcome Jesus, we are invited to prepare our homes and hearts. The Church calls us to prayer, reflection, and acts of charity during this time.

Lighting the Advent wreath, reading Scripture daily, and praying together as a family help children understand that Christmas is about Christ first.

Scripture to Guide Our Families

The angel’s words in Luke remind us of the joy of Christmas: “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people” (Luke 2:10). Sharing verses like this with children helps them connect the holiday with God’s love.

Practical Ways Families Can Prepare

  • Acts of Service: Encourage children to make small sacrifices or do acts of kindness for others.

  • Prayer at Home: Create a simple family prayer space with a nativity scene.

  • Faith-Based Traditions: Read the story of Jesus’ birth on Christmas Eve before opening gifts.

Keeping Christ at the Center

At Divine Redeemer, teachers and families work together to ensure children see Christmas as a celebration of Jesus’ birth, not just a holiday of presents.

By preparing our hearts during Advent, we help our children experience Christmas as a season of joy, love, and gratitude—the way God intended.
